New Year, New Me… Resolutions

New year, new me…

It is that time of the year where everyone starts to think about their new year\’s resolutions. New year\’s resolutions get made every year in a bid to better ourselves. We give up chocolate, hit 10,000 steps a day, drink more water. The list goes on. But how long do these resolutions for a ‘new me’ last? A week? A month?

What if these new year\’s resolutions actually made us focus on how we can make small, achievable actions in our everyday lives which can make a real impact. And we actually stuck to them. FOR A WHOLE YEAR. By which point it is a habit, which we barely think about anymore.

To inspire you, the team at Actions Speak Louder have written down what their new year\’s resolutions are.

Khalid: The past year has been tough for us all with mental health being a significant theme. The ongoing pandemic, life and current affairs is overwhelming. I have decided to commit more time to myself, away from the news and work, to just take a step back and relax. For me, this means travelling, seeing friends and walking more frequently. I think most of us need to identify these activities that will benefit us in these new times. I will also further extend my boycotting actions to any and all products from the occupied territories and China. This will be extremely difficult, but as with anything, it should only be done within our means.

Beth: Over the course of the last few months, I have begun to become more educated about the impact of fast fashion and the fashion industry as a whole. With that in mind I have decided to make a big step in the year 2022 and commit to only buying second-hand clothes, for a whole year! It is kind of scary to be honest. At a time in my life where a lot of things are changing and the prospect of getting a graduate job in the next year this could cause some problems. But if anything, the last few months have shown me just how much stuff is available to you second hand, and just how easy it is to get your hand on.

Now this might not seem like it is going to have a large impact on the world and climate change. But if I look at the amount of clothes which I bought in the last year, then you start to see the impact it might have. And by no means I buy the most amount of clothes out of everyone I know, but it is more than I need. So, for the year of 2022, I am committing to only buying second-hand clothes.

Some other ideas are to carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic ones, buy fruit and veg which is not wrapped in plastic, introduce meat-free mondays into your household, or spend more time educating yourself on global issues . These small actions can make a real difference to the world, they build up and make a change.
